Second Tuesday Wine Dinner Series Returns this Spring

Arizona's only AAA Five-Diamond and Forbes Five-Star restaurant, Kai at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort & Spa will again host a wine dinner series in partnership with several acclaimed vineyards the second Tuesday of every month, April through July, 2014.

Kai's Wine Dinner Series invites you on a tour and celebration of family-owned wineries from the west coast. Join us for food and drink that celebrates the epic vistas, rich terroir and great diversity that create our nation's premier wine landscape and the rich legacies built to endure by generations of families with wine cultivation in their blood.

Beginning on April 8th and held again on May 13th, June 10th, and July 8th, Kai will pair its award-winning cuisine with outstanding wines and guest speakers representing each vineyard.

Each event will be a six-course dinner that will pair the month's winery with cuisine influenced by its flavors. These events will be offered to a limited number of guests and will be priced at $140 per person. Each guest is invited to a private reception with hors d'oeuvres beginning at 6:30 p.m. The six-course dinner with wine pairings will then follow with seating at 7:00 p.m.

Renteria and Maldonado

On April 8th we will bring two wineries, Renteria and Maldonado from Napa Valley, together for one spectacular evening of food, wine and discourse. Guests Oscar Renteria and Hugo Maldonado will host the evening representing their respective wineries and share pairing insights.

In 1993, Oscar Renteria, who had worked alongside his father for many years, assumed proprietorship of Renteria Vineyard Management. Oscar continued to care for the handful of distinguished vineyards his father cultivated and progressively increased his clientele. Working with select vineyards in Napa Valley and Sonoma's Russian River, Renteria grows world renowned grapes for clients that include William Selyem, Frank Family, Blackbird, Bosche Vineyard, Andy Erickson, Patz & Hall, Robert Mondavi Winery, Caymus, Rombauer and Duckhorn. Continually increasing the quality of geographically diverse vineyards, Oscar implements new approaches in vineyard technology. While father and son continue their hands on approach to viticulture, Oscar believes the infusion of technology is insurance for the future. By combining practical, generational field knowledge with innovative trials and experimentation, the Renteria family has found a balance which allows them to grow the finest grapes possible. Today, Renteria Vineyard Management is the 3rd largest vineyard management company in Napa Valley.

Forty-four years ago, Lupe Maldonado moved to California from Atacheo, a small farming community in Michoacan, Mexico. Lupe spent many years working in vineyards throughout Napa Valley. He settled down in the small town of St. Helena. In 1971 Lupe was working for Sterling Vineyards when Peter Newton offered Lupe the opportunity to join him in the creation of a new winery in the Spring Mountain District of St. Helena. Lupe's dedication and hard work were beginning to pay off; he was named vineyard manager for Newton Vineyard. With Newton, Lupe found a home where he proudly dedicated all his energy for over thirty years. His son Hugo succeeded him in 1999. Lupe began devoting his three decades of viticulture wisdom to his own grapes. He bought a 10-acre piece of land in the coolest southern reaches of Napa Valley, in Jamieson Canyon, which he developed into his own vineyards. Lupe lives in the midst of the vines that he planted and tends. Lupe and his son Hugo, a graduate in Viticulture and Enology from the University of California at Davis, and their families are partners in the project. They farm the vineyard together, and oversee the whole winemaking project, as well as operating a small vineyard management company that grows grapes for the likes of Luc Morlet, Hartwell Vineyards, Newton Vineyards and Wente Vineyards. Hugo & Lidia Maldonado have established their family winery as one of the premier producers of Chardonnay in Napa Valley. Their Los Olivos & Parr Vineyard Chardonnays regularly receive scores in the 90-94 pt range.

Illahe Vineyards

On May 13th our focus will shift northward, to Illahe Vineyards from Willamette Valley, Oregon and we will be graced with the company of Bethany Ford who is not only the sales representative but also the winemaker's wife.

Illahe Vineyards
Illahe wines are dedicated to quality wine production. Because of the care we can give to each lot, we're able to produce an excellent Willamette Valley pinot noir for daily drinking and exceptionally complex, deep reserve and grand reserve blends. We make sustainable, handcrafted wines from our Estate vineyard. We are farmers at heart, and we enjoy being close to nature through our grapes, watching every season change the landscape around us, and every vintage change the wines in the bottle.

Meyer Family Cellars

On June 10th we will return our focus to the Napa Valley region and be joined by Matt Meyer, owner and winemaker at Meyer Family Cellars in Napa Valley.

Meyer Family Cellars
From an early age, Matt's goal was to be a winegrower like his father. As he grew up, he spent much of his time in the vineyard and cellar at Silver Oak. The passion he developed for wine led him to the University of California, Davis, where he was awarded a Masters in Viticulture in 2002. His wife, Karen was born and raised in Perth, Western Australia. After a harvest in Margaret River, she was hooked on wine. She completed a degree in enology at Charles Stuart University, then spent the next few years working harvests around the world. In 1999 Matt and Karen met in Oregon while working the crush at Argyle Winery in the Willamette Valley.

And concluding our celebration of family series, on July 8th, we will be joined by Hedges Estate from Red Mountain AVA in Washington.
