August in a desert garden is a hard time for plants. Depending on the amount of shade and water your garden receives some plants may survive the desert heat. For most gardeners it is the time to say goodbye to your summer plants and prepare for your fall crops. However, your summer plants can still play a large role in a successful garden. Take your old plants and add them to your compost pile. Right now at GAJI we are pulling out plants that are no longer producing and turning over the soil to get ready to plant at the end of September.

Once your garden is clear composting and conditioning the soil become important tasks. When composting be sure that you are mixing your pile and keep it moist. To understand what your soil may need simply use a test kit that can be purchased at most garden stores. Once you get the results add the appropriate ingredients to your soil and then let it rest until you are ready to plant your fall crops.
